Renowned Chinese writer and translator Ren Rongrong dies aged 100
1
PART 01
Ren Rongrong, a celebrated publisher, writer and award-winning translator, died in Shanghai aged 100 on September 22.

Ren was born in Shanghai. After graduating from the Department of Chinese Literature at the Great China University, he worked in some of the most famous publishing houses and served as(作为) deputy(副手) chief editor of the Shanghai Translation Publishing House.

A proficient(熟练的) translator of English, Italian, and Japanese, Ren spent 80 years translating children's literature and introducing classical works like The Complete Fairy Tales of Hans Christian Andersen, Pinocchio and Pippi Longstocking to the Chinese.

In the span (持续时间,范围)of his career, he translated more than 80 works of nearly 40 famous writers.
“I translate childrens literature from many countries. I hope Chinese children can read excellent childrens literature from around the world. I hope they can also enjoy great work, just like other children around the world,”said Ren on one occasion.

Despite having to wear an oxygen mask at all times due to a medical condition in his twilight(暮年) years, Ren continued to compose essays.

Yong Donglin, a farmer in Muchuan county, Sichuan province, got up early on Friday to prepare for a straw dragon dance.
The 58-year-old had practiced the dance for two years. But he was especially excited this time. He and more than 20 fellow farmers would
perform during the fifth Chinese Farmers' Harvest Festival celebrations in the Xinjin district of Chengdu, Sichuan province. The festival
celebrations, whose opening ceremony falls on the autumn equinox, opened on Friday this year. Despite rain, performers from different
parts of the province presented songs and dances featuring farming culture. One of the performance's most impressive highlights came
with the debut of an actor playing Li Bing, the governor of Sichuan more than 2,000 years ago. Some people watching the performance
applauded Li's words: "My dream of turning the land of abundance into a granary more than 2,000 years ago has now come true."The phrase "land of abundance" is a reminder in Sichuan of how that came to be. It was the result of the Dujiangyan irrigation project. In ancient times,
the Chengdu Plain, now one of China's most populous and important agricultural regions, suffered from incessant summer flooding of the Minjiang River, a tributary of the Yangtze River, and withered with drought in the winter.
Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning urged(大力催促) Washington at a regular news briefing not to advance deliberation(故意的) of the bill.

“ If the TPA is further deliberated and even passed as law, it would greatly shake the political foundation of China-US relations and cause extremely severe consequences for bilateral relations as well as peace and stability across the Taiwan Straits,”the spokeswoman warned.
China firmly opposes the act, Mao said, as it interferes in China's internal affairs, runs counter to international law and the basic norms governing international relations, as well as sends seriously wrong signals to “Taiwan independence”separatist forces.

Beijing strongly urged Washington to abide(遵守) by the one-China principle and the three China-US joint communiques(公报) and earnestly honor the pledge(承诺,诺言) made by the US president that the country does not support “Taiwan independence”, the spokeswoman said.
The US should stop playing the “Taiwan card”and not exploit(利用) Taiwan to contain China, she added. “China will take all necessary measures to resolutely defend national sovereignty and territorial integrity in light of the process and final outcome of the bill.”

"No country, no force and no individual should miscalculate the strong resolve, determination and capabilities of the Chinese government and Chinese people to safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as realize national reunification and rejuvenation," she said.

The third is to promote green transformation in a practical manner. Wang called for gradually withdrawing from the mode of traditional energy on the basis of secure and reliable new energy sources. He also appealed for high-quality and just transformation within the framework of sustainable(可持续的) development.

The fourth is to create a fine political environment. Unilateralism,(单边主义) geopolitical(地缘政治学) games and green barriers should be abandoned, said Wang.
Developed countries should achieve carbon neutrality(碳中和) well ahead of schedule, make room for developing countries to develop, and restore mutual(共同的) trust between the North and the South with concrete(具体的) actions, he said.

Wang also introduced a series of positive measures taken by China to unswervingly(坚定不移地) follow the path of ecological priority, green and low-carbon development.

China has announced carbon-peaking(碳峰值) and carbon-neutrality goals and will complete the world's most dramatic(巨大的) reduction in carbon emission(排出) intensity in the shortest time in global history, Wang said.
China believes that global climate governance goals should be advanced in four aspects, Wang said.

The first is to focus on making the UN climate change conference to be held in a success, so as to achieve positive and balanced outcomes , Wang said.

The second is to attach importance to implementing(实施,执行) actions. It is necessary to follow the principle of common but differentiated responsibilities, adhere to the consensuses(一致的意见) that have been reached, and accelerate the realization of the temperature control goal set in the Paris Agreement, Wang said.
